What is stress?

Stress occurs when demands on a person exceed the person’s normal capacity to respond. Ability to deal with stress depends on:

  • The impact of the stress
  • How you ordinarily deal with stress
  • The internal reserve left to deal with more stress at any one time

Stress can be positive (eustress) or negative (distress):

  • Eustress: Positive stress that challenges and motivates us
  • Distress: Negative stress that causes emotional and physical exhaustion, and often high anxiety
